Elmali Baba was a major 16th-century Bektashi sheikh who led some 500 dervishes in the Eastern Rhodopes; a 1579 Ottoman document attests his dergâh's authority. The active complex (türbe, mosque, ritual hall) near the village of Bivolyane, Kardzhali Province, contains six unnamed graves, one believed to be his. An annual Alevi-Bektashi fair is held there each September; his death is recorded as 1585.
