Sheikh Abu Bakr al-Wafa'i (1503-1583) was a majdhub saint, one of the most important holy men of Ottoman Aleppo. Known for his unconventional life and miracle traditions, his tomb on the hill north of the city became a center of Aleppo's spiritual life. The Takiyyat al-Shaykh Abu Bakr lodge/complex was built around it. The area is today the Sheikh Maqsud quarter, which lay on the front lines during the 2012-2016 battle for Aleppo.
