Elmali Baba was a major 16th-century Bektashi sheikh who led some 500 dervishes in the Eastern Rhodopes; a 1579 Ottoman document attests his dergâh's authority. The active complex (türbe, mosque, ritual hall) near the village of Bivolyane, Kardzhali Province, contains six unnamed graves, one believed to be his.
