Syekh Sulaiman ar-Rasuli, known as "Inyiak Canduang," was a traditionalist (Kaum Tua) Shafi'i scholar born in Agam, West Sumatra, in 1871. In 1928 he co-founded the Persatuan Tarbiyah Islamiyah (Perti) and established the Madrasah Tarbiyah Islamiyah (MTI) at Candung. He authored works on jurisprudence, theology, Sufism and Minangkabau custom, including Aqwal al-Mardiyyah. He died in 1970 and is buried within the MTI Canduang complex, a site of pilgrimage.
