Born in 1259 AH/1839 CE in Citeko, Plered, Purwakarta, KH Tubagus Ahmad Bakri was an influential scholar and Sufi teacher known across West Java as 'Mama Sempur'. In 1911 he founded the As-Salafiyyah school at Sempur; many prominent scholars, such as Abuya Dimyati of Banten and Mama Cijerah of Bandung, were his students. He is reported to have authored more than fifty works. He died at Sempur in 1395 AH/1975 CE; his tomb is a leading pilgrimage site in the Priangan region.
