A Malay-Ottoman-born Islamic scholar, nationalist, and expert in falak (Islamic astronomy) (c. 1869/1870 Mecca â 27 April 1961 Kepala Batas, Penang). He was the first Mufti of Penang (served 1951â1956). Using astronomical/Islamic calculation he determined 31 August 1957 as the auspicious date for Malayan independence, advising that otherwise the suitable date would fall in 1962 (en.wikipedia, "Syeikh Abdullah Fahim"; Penang Religious Affairs Dept JAIPP). He was the grandfather of Malaysia's 5th Prime Minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. His tomb lies at the historic Masjid Al-Jamiul Badawi (Bertam/Kepala Batas), whose origins date to 1784.
