Born in 1875, the English novelist, scholar and translator Marmaduke Pickthall converted to Islam in 1917. His greatest service is 'The Meaning of the Glorious Koran' (1930), one of the most widely used English translations of the Qur'an in the English-speaking world. He edited Islamic publications in India and lectured on Islam. He died on 19 May 1936 and was buried in the Muslim section of Brookwood Cemetery.
