KH Muhammad Munawwir (c. 1870-1942) was born in Kauman, Yogyakarta, and after sixteen years in Mecca founded Indonesia's first Qur'an-specialised pesantren at Krapyak (Pondok Pesantren Krapyak / al-Munawwir) in 1910. Through his teaching of memorisation, recitation and the seven qira'at he became one of the principal chains of Qur'anic transmission in the Nusantara. His grave at Krapyak is visited by pilgrims.
