Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba (Serigne Touba, 'Khadim al-Rasul'), founder of the Mouride Sufi order, was a scholar and symbol of nonviolent resistance to French colonialism in Senegal. He died on 19 July 1927 and is interred inside the Great Mosque of Touba, the city he founded and whose mosque he had planned.
