Born in al-Kasri, Hadramaut in 1265 AH/1849 CE, Habib Abdullah bin Muhsin al-Attas studied in Mecca and Medina before migrating to Java in 1283 AH/1866 CE. He settled in the Empang district of Bogor, founded the An-Nur Mosque, taught Quran and spread the Ratib al-Attas and Ratib al-Haddad devotions. He died in 1352 AH/1933 CE and was buried beside the mosque; his tomb, revered as the 'Keramat Empang Bogor', is a pilgrimage site drawing visitors from across and beyond Java.
