One of the most influential Islamic scholars and educators of early-20th-century Kelantan and the Malay world. He studied in Mecca for about 22 years from c. 1887, returned around 1909, founded Pondok Kenali (c. 1911), edited the journal 'Majalah Pengasuh', and served on Kelantan's Majlis Agama Islam (established 1915). His promotion of Arabic instruction and his many high-ranking students earned Kelantan the title 'Serambi Mekah' ('Verandah of Mecca'). He died in 1352 AH / 1933 CE and was buried in Kubang Kerian.
