One of the greatest scholars of the Nusantara, a master of Arabic, fiqh and hadith (25 May 1835 – 24 April 1925). Born and died in Bangkalan (Madura, East Java). He was the teacher of the founders of Nahdlatul Ulama, foremost among them KH Hasyim Asy'ari; his guidance and spiritual blessing around 1920 are regarded as the foundation of NU's establishment in 1926 (NU Online Jatim; syaichona.net biography; Kompas). It is related that over five hundred thousand people attended his funeral. His tomb complex in Martajasah (with a mosque and a blessed well) is among Indonesia's busiest pilgrimage sites; he was declared a National Hero in 2025.
