The foremost Islamic scholar of Terengganu, a Naqshbandi Sufi teacher and religious advisor and State Council member under Sultan Zainal Abidin III; of the al-Idrus (al-Aidrus) sayyid lineage. He led an islah (reform) movement under British pressure, was credited with karamat, and sheltered anti-colonial fighters (Dato' Bahaman, Tok Gajah, Mat Kilau).
