Son of Hasyim Asy'ari and Indonesia's first and youngest Minister of Religious Affairs. Born in Tebuireng in 1914, he had memorized the Qur'an by age seven, contributed to the state's foundation as a BPUPKI member, and chaired the PBNU (1951–1953). He died on 19 April 1953 from a traffic accident near Cimahi and is buried beside his father in the Tebuireng family cemetery. He was declared a National Hero; his son Gus Dur rests in the same cemetery.
