A sharif from Taif descended from Hasan ibn Ali (the Qatadid sharifian line of Mecca) who married the second sultan's daughter and became Brunei's third sultan in 1425. He is credited with building Brunei's first mosque, correcting the qibla, governing by Islamic law, and adding 'Darussalam' to the country's name. Honored for his piety as 'Sultan Berkat' (the Blessed Sultan), immigrant sharifs like him were locally regarded as 'Wali Allah / Keramat'. He died in 836 AH / 1432 CE; his mausoleum at Kota Batu is a recognized heritage and reverence site. (Sources: en.wikipedia.org 'Sharif Ali'; bruneitourism.com)
