Şeyh Âdil is remembered as a scholar born in the 17th century in the town of Hanlı in Dagestan, who after his education was appointed by the Ottoman State as Subaşı (administrator) of Maraş and worked to bring peace between the Bayazıtlı and Dulkadirli tribes; he is reported to have died in 1704 and to be buried in the cemetery that bears his name. According to tradition he spread soil he had brought from Medina over this barren land, lending it spiritual significance. The Şeyhadil Cemetery in the Şeyh Adil neighbourhood of the Dulkadiroğlu district of Kahramanmaraş is one of the city's most important spiritual and historical sites; its historic gravestones have been the subject of academic study.
