Mirwais Khan Hotak, chief of the Ghilji Pashtun Hotak clan and kalantar of Kandahar, founded the Hotak dynasty. In 1709 he led a revolt against Safavid Persia, killing the governor Gurgin Khan and winning independence for Greater Kandahar. He declined the title of king and ruled until his death in 1715; revered as a national hero, he rests in his mausoleum at Kokaran.
