Ahmad Shah Durrani founded the Durrani Empire in 1747 and is regarded as the founder of the modern Afghan state ('Father of the Nation'). From his capital at Kandahar he unified the Pashtun tribes and campaigned across Persia, the Mughal lands and Punjab. He died in 1772 and was buried in Kandahar in a domed mausoleum housing his tomb and those of his children, which remains a national pilgrimage site.
