Sayyid Muhammad Waris Shah was an 18th-century Punjabi Sufi poet of the Chishti order. He is celebrated as the author of 'Heer Ranjha', a masterpiece of Punjabi literature in which earthly love serves as a metaphor for divine love. His tomb lies in Jandiala Sher Khan near Sheikhupura, his birthplace, and remains a major pilgrimage site.
