Malik bin Ejder is remembered, according to local tradition, as a companion/commander who took part in the Islamization of the Maraş region during the conquest (c. 637 CE) and is held to have been martyred there. His tomb stands on a hill overlooking Kumaşır Lake in the Aksu/Kumaşır locality about 6 km south of the Kahramanmaraş city centre; the structure, consisting of a small mosque and tomb chamber, is dated to 1201. It has been restored and opened to visitors and is an important faith-tourism site of the region. Because traditions about his identity differ (including confusion with Malik al-Ashtar, commander of Imam Ali), the historical details should be treated with caution.
