The leading Acehnese scholar of the 17th century (c. 1615-1693), who served as mufti/qadi of the Aceh Sultanate, notably as advisor to Sultana Safiatuddin. After long years of study in Arabia (chiefly Medina) and receiving ijaza from Ahmad al-Qushashi and Ibrahim al-Kurani, he became the first to introduce the Shattariyya tariqa to the archipelago. He authored Tarjuman al-Mustafid, the first complete Quran exegesis in Malay, and took a moderating stance in the wujudiyya controversy, unlike ar-Raniri. Reverently known as Teungku Syiah Kuala, he gives his name to Syiah Kuala University in Banda Aceh.
