Great Sufi poet born in Nishapur, one of the supreme figures of mystical literature through 'Mantiq al-Tayr', 'Ilahi-nama' and 'Tadhkirat al-Awliya'. Known as 'Attar' for his profession, venerated by Rumi. He is reported killed at Nishapur during the Mongol invasion (c. 618/1221). His mausoleum lies west of Nishapur.
