A great Sufi master who flourished in Khwarazm, founder of the Kubrawiyya order, renowned as the 'shaykh who shapes saints'. He was martyred in 1221 defending Konye-Urgench during the Mongol invasion. His mausoleum is the holiest pilgrimage point of Konye-Urgench (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). (Sources: TDV; Archnet.)
