Kiai Marogan (real name Masagus Haji Abdul Hamid bin Mahmud) was one of the most renowned scholars and Sufis of 19th-century Palembang. A shaykh of the Sammaniyya order, he received the path from his parents, who had studied under Shaykh Muhammad Aqib and Abd al-Samad al-Palimbani. A successful merchant, he devoted his wealth to spreading Islam and building mosques, including the Muara Ogan Mosque in Kertapati and the Lawang Kidul Mosque in 5 Ilir. He died in 1901; his tomb at the mouth of the Ogan River is among Palembang's most visited pilgrimage sites, drawing up to 500 visitors a day.
