Muhammad Sholeh bin Umar al-Samarani (c. 1820-1903), born in Jepara and settled in Semarang where he became known as 'Sholeh Darat', was one of the great scholars of Java. He pioneered Qur'anic exegesis in the Javanese language (Pegon script) and taught figures such as Hasyim Asy'ari, Ahmad Dahlan and RA Kartini. His grave lies in the Bergota cemetery of Semarang and is regularly visited by pilgrims.
