A celebrated companion and commander whom the Prophet titled 'Sayf Allah' (the Sword of God). From Mu'tah onward he won decisive victories in the conquests of Iraq and Syria and was the hero of Yarmuk. He spent his final years in Homs, where he died in 21/642 and was buried.
