Bilâl-i Habeşî (Bilal ibn Rabah), of Abyssinian origin, was the muezzin of the Prophet. The structure southwest of the Grand Mosque in Tarsus is a MAKAM based on the tradition that he gave the call to prayer here; since his grave is held to be in Damascus, this is a symbolic shrine. A waqf was established in 1519 and the mosque built in the 16th century; open to visitors. (Sources: TDV Encyclopedia of Islam 'Tarsus' and 'Bilâl-i Habeşî'; Kültür Portalı.)
