Bilal ibn Rabah (r.a.), the muezzin of the Prophet and the first muezzin of Islam, the Abyssinian companion who under torture never recanted, declaring 'Ahad, Ahad'. He died around 641 CE near Damascus (some say Aleppo or Darayya), and according to the majority of scholars was buried in the Bab al-Saghir Cemetery in Damascus; sites in Medina and Jordan are regarded as commemorative maqams.
