A great Muslim ruler of the Zangid dynasty, renowned for his jihad against the Crusaders and his justice; patron of Saladin. He united Syria and gained Egypt, founding countless madrasas, mosques and hospitals. He died at the Citadel of Damascus on 15 May 1174 and was buried in the Nuriyya Madrasa.
