The Prophet Yahya, son of Zachariah, praised in the Qur'an for his piety and tenderness of heart. Known in Christianity as John the Baptist, he was martyred by beheading on the order of Herod Antipas. In the main hall of the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, the maqam believed to contain his blessed head (a relic shrine, not a grave) is a famous place of visitation.
