Abu'l-Fida (1273-1331) was an Ayyubid-descended historian, geographer, and Mamluk-vassal ruler of Hama. In 1320 he was granted the rank of sultan with the title al-Malik al-Mu'ayyad and ruled Hama until his death. His major works are the universal history 'Mukhtasar tarikh al-bashar' and the geography 'Taqwim al-buldan'. His tomb is in the Abu'l-Fida Mosque on the Orontes; the mosque is popularly called Jami' al-Hayyat ('Mosque of the Serpents'). (Sources: TDV 'Ebü'l-Fidâ'; Wikipedia.)
