Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (Abuzer Gaffari) was one of the earliest companions of the Prophet Muhammad, renowned for his asceticism and truthfulness. His actual grave is at al-Rabadha near Medina, where he died (AH 32 / 652 CE). The structure in Ziyaret (Ziyaretpayamlı) village, 5 km east of Adıyaman, is NOT his real grave but a symbolic makam (cenotaph shrine) built in his memory, traditionally attributed to Sultan Murad IV after his Baghdad campaign (1623-1639). It is one of the region's most-visited pilgrimage sites.
