A famous successor (tabi'i) of Yemeni origin, renowned for his knowledge of the Torah, who embraced Islam under Umar; associated with Isra'iliyyat traditions. According to the most common report he died in Homs in 32/652-53 (an alternative places his death in Damascus, at Bab al-Saghir). A mosque and a black-basalt shrine in old Homs are attributed to him.
