The scholar who served as the 'link' in NU's founding, conveying the staff and Qur'anic verses from Syaikhona Kholil of Bangkalan to KH Hasyim Asy'ari that set the organization's establishment in motion. Born around 1897, he cleared the forest to found Pesantren Salafiyah Syafi'iyah (Sukorejo/Asembagus). He served as Mustasyar of the PBNU until his death. He died on 4 August 1990 and is buried in the Sukorejo pesantren cemetery. He was declared a National Hero.
