Rais Aam of the PBNU from 1984 to 1991, influential in returning NU to its 1926 principles (Khittah Nahdliyah) and in formulating the trilogy of brotherhood (ukhuwah islamiyah, wathaniyah, insaniyah). Born on 24 January 1926 in Talangsari, Jember, he studied under Hasyim Asy'ari at Tebuireng. He died on 23 January 1991 (7 Rajab 1411) and, per his own wish, is buried in the Tambak awliya cemetery at Ngadi, Mojo, Kediri, near the grave of Gus Miek; the site draws many pilgrims.
