Born in Sogratl, he was a leading murshid in the Naqshbandi silsila and one of the leaders of the 1877 Dagestan uprising. A renowned hafiz and Sufi scholar, his gravestone titles him a qutb ('pole'). After the uprising's suppression and his son's execution he was exiled to Gunib and then to Nizhneye Kazanishche, where he died. Though his nisba is 'of Sogratl', his tomb is in Nizhneye Kazanishche and is a listed cultural-heritage ziyarat.
