Yunus Emre

A great Turkish Sufi poet of the 13th-14th centuries, disciple of Tapduk Emre, who expressed divine love in plain Turkish. According to the Velâyetnâme he was born in Sarıköy near Sivrihisar (today's Yunusemre town in Mihalıççık, Eskişehir) and his grave is here; the grave was opened in 1946 during railway works and a monumental tomb was built in 1970. His burial place is disputed across many provinces (Karaman, Aksaray, Bursa, Manisa Kula, Erzurum, Isparta and others); the Mihalıççık grave is among the best documented but is not certain. Abdulfattah al-Wali

Abdülfettah-ı Velî is recorded as a Qādirī sheikh descended from Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani, traditionally placed in 13th-century Kastamonu. Around 1272 he founded the Yılanlı complex in central Kastamonu, comprising a hospital, mosque and tomb. Kara Davut Efendi

Kara Davut Efendi was a scholar and Sufi of the Bayramiyye order, one of the successors of Haci Bayram-i Veli. According to the inscription in his tomb he died in 1453. His grave is in the courtyard of the village mosque in Kuyumcutekke village, Beypazari district, Ankara, and remains an active site of visitation. Tapduk Emre

Tapduk Emre was a 13th-century Turkmen dervish and sheikh, known as the spiritual master of the great Sufi poet Yunus Emre. He is associated with the Babai-Kalenderi/Haydari current. His exact death date is undocumented (late 13th century). His tomb, the most widely accepted among several attributed shrines, is in Emremsultan village, Nallihan district, Ankara. Huseyin Gazi

Huseyin Gazi is a warrior-saint (gazi) believed to have been martyred fighting the Byzantines during the Islamization of Anatolia; folk tradition names him the father of Battal Gazi and a seyyid. His historicity is largely legendary and the sources conflict. His tomb atop Huseyingazi Hill in Mamak originated as a 13th-century lodge, was repaired in 1378 and again under Mehmed the Conqueror (1463). (Sources: Mamak District Governorate; Kultur Envanteri.)

Ahi Elvan

Ahi Elvan (Haci Elvan b. Mehmed Bey) was a figure of late-14th-century Ankara's Ahi (futuwwa) milieu. He built the Ahi Elvan Mosque (Samanpazari/Altindag); per the minbar inscription the mosque was renovated by him in 1413. Sources describe him primarily as the mosque's founder; his grave is associated with the mosque complex. His exact death date is unknown (late 14th century). Rahima Khatun (Wife of Prophet Job)

In Eyyüp Nebi village (Viranşehir), a modest square, single-domed shrine is attributed to Rahima Khatun, wife of Prophet Job, who tended him through his illness; it lies about 500 m northwest of Job's shrine. This is a maqam/visitation tradition (not a confirmed grave) — the village's prophet shrines have been visited for centuries; Sultan Murad IV endowed waqf for their upkeep, and they were restored by the Şanlıurfa Governorate from 1992. Sheikh Mas'ud (Shih Maksut)

In the Şıh Maksut quarter of Şanlıurfa, Sheikh Mas'ud is buried in the basement of a four-iwan Seljuk-medrese-plan lodge; sources describe him as a scholar-Sufi linked to Ahmad Yasawi who came from Nishapur and founded a lodge in 12th-century Urfa. A nearby cistern inscription records the structure as built in AH 579 (1183 CE) by 'Mas'ud son of Sa'id of Nishapur'; it is among the oldest dated shrines in the city. Sheikh Muslim Hafiz

Buried in the Harran Gate (Harrankapı) Cemetery of Şanlıurfa, Sheikh Muslim Hafiz was a scholar, Qur'an-memorizer and Sufi, a khalifa of the Naqshbandi-Khalidi branch under Sheikh Abdurrahman of Kirkuk. He memorized the Qur'an in childhood and recited it at Hasan Padişah Mosque, and led the recovery of mosques sold off in Urfa between 1930-1950; he died in 1958. Sheikh Izzeddin

Sheikh Izzeddin was a 14th-century Sufi sheikh and teacher in Ankara whose students were largely within the Ahi organization; an Ottoman waqf document calls him a seyyid. His death date is disputed: the inscription is read either as 705/1306 or 752/1352. His tomb in Ulus/Haci Bayram is a reconstruction built on the foundations of the original demolished in the 1930s. Prophet Shu'ayb (Shu'ayb City Shrine)

In the ancient city in Özkent (Şuayb City) quarter of Harran, a cave is visited in popular tradition as the shrine of Prophet Shu'ayb, after whom the city is said to be named. This is a maqam (not a confirmed grave, a visitation tradition) — the standing remains are Late Roman (4th-5th c. CE) and, with no scientific excavation, the prophetic link is historically unverified. Imam Muhammad al-Baqir Shrine

In İmam Bakır village about 3 km northeast of Harran stands a square, domed shrine attributed to Abu Ja'far Imam Muhammad al-Baqir, fifth of the Twelve Imams, with an adjoining mosque. This is a maqam (not a confirmed grave, a visitation tradition) — tradition holds that a finger of the Imam was buried here and the village took his name; al-Baqir's actual grave is in Medina. Tajeddin Sultan

Tajeddin Sultan (Tajeddinzade Mustafa Efendi) was a 17th-century sheikh of the Celveti (Jelveti) Sufi order linked to Aziz Mahmud Hudayi. He founded a dervish lodge in Ankara's Hamamonu district. His tomb is among the most visited shrines in Ankara after that of Haci Bayram-i Veli. His exact death date is unknown. Bunyamin Ayashi

Bunyamin Ayashi (real name Mustafa) was a Sufi sheikh and a founding figure of the Bayrami-Melami branch. He is presented as a successor of either Omer Dede Sikkini or Haci Bayram-i Veli; the Melami line continued through his successor Pir Ali Aksarayi. His death date is disputed (c. 916/1510, 918/1512, or 926/1520). His tomb is in the Dervisimam quarter of Ayas district, Ankara, at the northeast corner of the mosque bearing his name. Sayyid Abdulhakim Arvasi

Sayyid Abdulhakim Arvasi was a scholar and spiritual guide of the Naqshbandi-Khalidi path, holding ijaza in five orders; he was the spiritual mentor of the poet Necip Fazil Kisakurek. Born in 1865 in Baskale (Van), he died on 27 November 1943 while being moved toward Ankara. His tomb is in the cemetery at Baglum, Kecioren district, Ankara, a registered and active site of visitation. Aşıklı Sultan

Known popularly as 'Yanık Evliya' (the Burnt Saint), Aşıklı Sultan is, by tradition, a Turkish commander said to have been martyred by an arrow during the siege that wrested Kastamonu from Byzantium. The eyvan-type tomb in the Honsalar quarter holds five cenotaphs. His death date is not firmly documented and is tied to the 12th century; its legendary character should be noted transparently. Sheikh Mehmed Efendi (of Daday)

Born in Sofular village (Daday, Kastamonu), Sheikh Mehmed Efendi is named among the deputies personally licensed by Şeyh Şâbân-ı Velî, thus belonging to the Halvetiyye-Şâbâniyye lineage. He settled in the Kuzyaka area as a spiritual guide and died in 1662. His tomb stands in Kuzyaka, in the Akçasu quarter of Şeyh village, beside the Akçasu Mosque. Prophet Abraham (Mawlid al-Khalil Shrine)

The Khalil al-Rahman complex and the Mawlid al-Khalil (Dergâh) Cave around Balıklıgöl in Şanlıurfa are visited in popular tradition as the birthplace of Prophet Abraham and where he was saved from Nimrod's fire. This is a maqam (not a confirmed grave, a visitation tradition) — sources describe it as a birth/legend site, not a tomb. The Khalil al-Rahman Mosque was built in 1211-12. Ahmed Remzi Akyürek (Dede)

One of the last Mevlevi sheikhs, a Sufi poet and scholar (Kayseri 1872 – Kayseri 6 November 1944). Born into a Mevlevi family, he became the last sheikh of the Üsküdar Mevlevihane and was renowned as a librarian and divan poet. He was buried in the cemetery of the Seyyid Burhâneddin Tomb in Kayseri, where his ancestors and his brother Şeyh Hüsâmeddin Efendi also rest. Sheikh Merzuban al-Wali

A sayyid Sufi (of the Prophet's lineage) whose given name was Mahmûd b. Alî al-Husaynî al-Baghdâdî. Following the Vefâiyye tradition he came to Anatolia from Khorasan/Baghdad and settled in the Seljuk period at Tekke village near Zara; tradition holds that Sultan Alâeddin Keykubad granted him land for a madrasa. He is regarded as the spiritual patron of Zara and is said to have died in 1306. His tomb stands at Tekke village about 5 km from Zara and was restored in 2021. Ahi Emir Ahmed

A leading figure of the Ahi (futuwwa guild) organization in 13th-14th century Sivas; of Khorasani origin, he settled in Anatolia (first Bayburt, then Sivas). He was both an Ahi leader and a devotee of the Mevlevi path, with documented friendships with Mevlana's son Sultan Veled and grandson Ulu Ârif Çelebi. He is known as a wealthy benefactor whose endowment (waqf) is recorded; he died c. 1333 (734 AH). Sheikh Coban Veli

A Sufi sheikh nicknamed 'Çoban' (the shepherd, râî) for tending his father's herds, said by tradition to belong to the Vefâiyye line attached to Ebü'l-Vefâ; he is held to have lived around the 12th-13th century. His death date is uncertain (some records give 772/1371); the fountain inscription of his complex (tomb, mosque, fountain, zaviye) is dated 723/1323. Shaykh Ibrahim Tennuri

A 15th-century Sufi, disciple (khalifa) of Akşemseddin and eponymous master of the Tennûriyye branch of the Bayramiyye-Şemsiyye order. By Akşemseddin's order he returned to Kayseri to begin spiritual guidance and died in autumn 887/1482. His tomb stands on the west side of the Şeyh (Tennûrî) Mosque he built; it also holds the cenotaphs of Lütfullah Tennûrî and Şeyh Ali Sultan. Shaykh Turesan Veli

A dervish-sheikh active around İncesu during the Islamization of Anatolia, linked in popular memory to the tradition of Ahmad Yasawi. He was the first sheikh and endowment-administrator of the zâviye on Tekke Dağı southwest of İncesu, built by Mahperi Huand Hatun, wife of Seljuk Sultan Alâeddin Keykubad I; he was alive when the endowment deed was drawn (638/1240) and is said to have died around the lodge's completion (c. 640/1243).
