Freedman and adopted son of the Prophet, he is the only Companion mentioned by name in the Qur'an. He was the first commander of the Muslim army at Mu'tah (8 AH) and was martyred carrying the standard. His tomb is held to lie within the Ja'far al-Tayyar complex at al-Mazar al-Janubi; lacking a tomb-specific corroborated numeric coordinate, the location is left null.
