Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi'i, eponym of the Shafi'i school and founder of usul al-fiqh, one of the four great Sunni imams. He died in 204/820 in Cairo and was buried in al-Qarafa (the City of the Dead). His mausoleum is the largest freestanding domed tomb in Egypt (dome 607/1211), part of UNESCO Historic Cairo.
