According to tradition, Seyyid Hasan Gazi was a warrior-saint descended from the Prophet Muhammad (a sayyid), remembered as the brother of Hüseyin Gazi and the uncle and father-in-law of Seyyid Battal Gazi. He is said to have been martyred (around 830 CE) during the siege of Zengibar Castle in the Abbasid period. His tomb stands at the site known as 'Şehitlik Tepesi' (Martyrs' Hill) in the Darende district of Malatya; beside the tomb is a martyrs' monument inscribed with the names of 92 soldiers from Darende killed in various wars. The structure was restored and opened to visitors in 2005 and is an important faith-tourism stop in the region.
