A leading hadith scholar of the 3rd Islamic century and author of the great hadith-fiqh compilation al-Musannaf; many major traditionists, including teachers of Bukhari and Muslim, transmitted from him. He lived and taught in Sanaa. He died in 211/827 in Sanaa and was buried there; his exact grave site is reported variously in the sources, and as ≥2 agreeing numeric coordinate sources could not be verified, no pin is given.
