One of the founding scholars of the Hanafi tradition in Bukhara. He died in 217 AH/832. As reported by Mu'in al-Fuqara, his grave lies in the cemetery on the hill in Bukhara that bears his name (Tell-i Khwaja); his son Abu Hafs al-Saghir and al-Sabadhmuni lie right beside him. The cemetery is still one of the city's main places of visitation.
