According to Iranica KHIVA, the city gained prominence at the beginning of the 18th century after the establishment of a shrine complex dedicated to Pahlavan Mahmud, a 14th-century saint, poet and wrestler who became Khiva's patron saint; UNESCO 543 lists the 'Mausoleum of Pahlavon Mahmoud' among the monuments of Itchan Kala. Died 722 H/1322.
