Sidi Mahmoud Ben Amar served as qadi (judge) of Timbuktu from 1498 and is among the foremost of the city's '333 saints'; he died around 1548 (955 AH). His mausoleum in the north of Timbuktu was a major pilgrimage site. It was destroyed by Ansar Dine on 30 June 2012 and rebuilt in 2015-2016 under a UNESCO programme.
