Abdurrahmân bin Yûsuf Rûmî is an Ottoman scholar and saint who was born in the Hijri year 874 (1469 CE) and died in Bursa in the Hijri year 954 (1547 CE). During his period of training on the path of knowledge, he acquired learning by serving the scholars of his time such as Mevlânâ Kutbeddîn, Mevlânâ Ali Fenârî, and Mevlânâ Ali Yekânî. After completing his education, he first served as a professor (müderris) in Bolu, then taught at the Çermik madrasa in Bursa, where he was occupied with teaching knowledge for a long time. It is related that in the later period of his life, alongside his activities of knowledge and spiritual guidance, he turned toward worship and remembrance (zikr), giving weight to the path of Sufism. According to the sources, during an illness he recounted that the wall split open and a certain person came to serve him night and day, and that he later met this person, known by the name Kara Hoca in a village, and together with him beheld the Kaaba from a high place. Such states are related among the legends pointing to his spiritual rank in the sources connected to him. After his death he was buried in the garden of the Zeyniye lodge in Bursa, which was the center of the Zeyniyye path to which he belonged. He is remembered as a figure known in his own era both for his scholarly accumulation and for his asceticism and piety.
