A Lezgin Naqshbandi shaykh regarded as the ideological founder of the Caucasian muridism movement and the spiritual teacher of Imam Shamil and the imams of Dagestan. He was born in Yukhary-Yarag (Vini-Yarag) in present-day Suleyman-Stalsky District. Persecuted by Russian forces, he withdrew to the mountain aul of Sogratl, where he died and is buried; his mausoleum remains an active ziyarat.
