Habib Husein bin Abubakar Alaydrus, a scholar of Hadhrami (Yemeni) origin, settled on the Sunda Kelapa coast of Batavia (Jakarta) in the 18th century and in 1739 founded the mosque now known as Masjid Luar Batang, aiding the spread of Islam in the port region. He died on 24 June 1756. His tomb inside the mosque, revered as 'Habib Luar Batang', is a major pilgrimage site visited almost daily, including by pilgrims from Malaysia and Singapore.
