IMPORTANT NOTE: Gazi Ali Pasha was primarily an Ottoman statesman and warrior-governor (beylerbeyi); no widespread popular saint cult is documented for him — his entry rests on his being the founder of the oldest Islamic monument in Romania and the occupant of a documented Ottoman tomb. Probably of Hungarian origin (Macaroğlu), he was beylerbeyi of the province of Özi, which included Dobruja. In 1609-1610 he built a charitable complex at Babadag (mosque, medrese, imaret, tomb); the mosque is the oldest surviving Islamic architecture in Romania.
