Baba Abdullah Melçani

Baba Abdullah Melçani was a 19th-century Albanian Bektashi baba and a bejtexhi (poet) who wrote in Albanian (R. Elsie, The Albanian Bektashi, 2019; F. A. Turan, "Bektashi Tekkes in Albania", 2018). He led the Melçan tekke near Korçë (founded in 1640 by Hysen Ali Dede) for about forty years and died in 1852. The oldest and only surviving fortified (walled) Bektashi lodge in Albania became a center of the Albanian national awakening in his era and served as the de facto Bektashi headquarters in the 1920s.

Husein-baba Zukić

Husein Zukić (d. 1213-1214/1798-1800), after studying in Fojnica and Sarajevo (Gazi Husrev-beg Madrasa), went to Istanbul where he affiliated with Hafiz Mehmed Çanakhisari in the circle of the Sheikh Murad Lodge and entered the Naqshbandi-Mujaddidi path (TDV, "Nakshbandiyya" and "Bosnia-Herzegovina"; BiH National Monuments Commission designation, 2012). After sojourns in Konya, Baghdad, Bukhara and Samarkand, he founded a lodge in his native village of Živčići in 1195 (1780-81), spreading the Mujaddidi branch in Bosnia and adopting the vocal (jahri) dhikr suited to the local temperament. His tomb, on the hill above the lodge, was built by his disciple Sheikh Abdurrahman Sirri and was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2012.

Gazi Baba (Aşık Çelebi)

The tomb of Gazi Baba stands on a hill northeast of Skopje and, by local tradition, is the grave of the 16th-century Ottoman poet and kadi of Skopje Aşık Çelebi (given name Pir Mehmed) (TDV, "Aşık Çelebi", Günay Kut). Born in Prizren in 1520, Aşık Çelebi is the author of the celebrated biographical dictionary of poets Meşairü'ş-şuara; after various judgeships he died of pleurisy while kadi of Skopje in 979/1572 and was buried here. The tomb was destroyed in the 1963 earthquake and rebuilt in 2013 with support from the Bursa Municipality. The identification of Gazi Baba with Aşık Çelebi is an accepted local tradition rather than documented certainty (noted transparently).

Baba Adam Shahid

A semi-legendary Muslim martyr whose tomb lies at Rampal (Kazi Qasba), Munshiganj district, Bangladesh. In folklore he is said to have fallen fighting Raja Vallalasena during an early campaign into Vikrampura, triggered by a cow-sacrifice dispute (Wikipedia; Banglapedia). A mosque was built over his tomb in 888/1483. Note: his historicity is explicitly disputed; Banglapedia states "true or false, this tradition is the only source for reconstructing the history of Baba Adam Shahid" and records that scholars challenge the story's authenticity. His death date is undocumented and is variously given as the 12th (~1119), late 14th or 15th century; therefore death_hijri/death_gregorian are left null, and no pin is given as two independent coordinate sources were not found (transparency note, rule #9.3).

Sheikh Hamza Makhdum

A 16th-century saint of Kashmir (d. 984/1576), whose birth name was Muhammad Hamza Raina and who is revered as "Sultan-ul-Arifeen" and "Mehboob-ul-Alam" (Wikipedia, "Hamza Makhdoom"; Greater Kashmir). He belonged to the Suhrawardi-Kubrawi tradition. His shrine (Makhdoom Sahib / Ziyarat Hazrat Sultan) stands on the southern slope of Hari Parbat (Koh-e-Maran) in Srinagar; a shrine was first built under the Mughal emperor Akbar and rebuilt during Afghan rule by governor Atta Muhammad Khan around 1821. He is reported to have been born in 900/1494. The coordinate is cross-verified via OpenStreetMap and Wikimapia (agreeing within ~10 m); the shrine building is distinct from the hilltop/fort location.

Sharafuddin Yahya Maneri

A major Indian Sufi, the central figure of the Firdausiyya branch (d. 782/1381); born in 689/1290 at Maner near Bihar (TDV Encyclopedia of Islam, "Mânerî, Şerefeddin"). He studied at Sonargaon (Dhaka region), affiliated with Najibuddin Firdausi and became the principal representative of the Firdausiyya branch of the Kubrawiyya. He established a khanqah at Bihar (Sharif) and became famous for his letter-collections "Maktubat" (Maktubat-i Sadi: 100 letters; Maktubat-i Du-Sadi: 200 letters) and his "Malfuzat." His tomb, the Badi Dargah, at Bihar Sharif is a major pilgrimage site. Note: the death year is given as 782 AH by Wikidata and 783 AH by TDV (the Gregorian 1381 is stable), and he should not be confused with different saints at Maner Sharif near Patna (transparency note). Umar ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Attas

Umar ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Attas (d. 1072/1652) was a great Sufi and scholar of the Bâ Alawi sada family whose lineage reaches Ali; he is known by the epithet "Qutb al-Anfas" and is the founder of the Attas branch of the Bâ Alawi. He studied under masters of his age such as Husayn ibn Abu Bakr ibn Salim and was regarded as a spiritual leader in Hadramaut. His most famous work is the Ratib al-Attas, a litany of remembrance and supplication drawn from Quran and hadith, still widely recited today. He died in the town of Huraydah, where he spent his final years, and was buried there.

Enihan Baba

Enihan Baba is a legendary figure revered as a dervish and healer by the Alevi-Bektashi and Pomak communities of the central Rhodopes; his historical existence is unverified and the information rests largely on legend (E. Troeva, "Momchil ili Enihan", Rodopski Starini/BAS; V. Grigorov, tombs venerated by Bulgarian Muslims in the central Rhodopes, Sofia 1998). His shrine stands on the Svoboda peak (formerly "Eni Han Baba") about 13 km above the village of Davidkovo, atop an ancient Thracian sanctuary, and contains an empty stone sarcophagus. In legend the lodge of his brother Sarı Baba lies near Momchilovtsi; the shrine, ruined in the 1970s, was rebuilt in 2005 and draws visitors from the Kardzhali/Momchilgrad region. Ki Ageng Gribig (Jatinom)

An influential Islamic scholar and preacher in Jatinom (Klaten), Central Java, in the Mataram-Islam era. He was closely associated with Sultan Agung Hanyakrakusuma and declined the offered post of Bupati Nayaka in order to remain a religious teacher (id.wikipedia, "Makam Ki Ageng Gribig"; Central Java provincial tourism portal). Returning from the Hajj he distributed apem cakes; after his death this became the annual Yaqowiyu tradition, held on the Friday in mid-Safar, its name taken from his prayer "Yaa Qowiyyu" (O Almighty, grant us strength). His red-stone-and-wood tomb in Jatinom is a major pilgrimage and cultural site.

Sunan Prawoto (Raden Mukmin)

The fourth Sultan of the Demak Sultanate (r. 1546–1549), son of Sultan Trenggana. He moved the capital to the hill of Prawoto (today Prawoto village, Sukolilo, Pati, Central Java) and was noted for favoring religious scholarship over statecraft, bearing the title "Sunan" (id.wikipedia, "Sunan Prawoto"; official Pati Regency tourism site). He was assassinated in 1549 by Rangkud, an agent of his cousin Arya Penangsang. Scholars dispute whether his grave is at Prawoto or within the Great Mosque of Demak (Thaqafiyyat journal, UIN Sunan Kalijaga); no pin is given as precise coordinates could not be verified.

Syekh Magelung Sakti (Cirebon)

A revered Islamic propagator in northern Cirebon; according to legend he came from the land of Sham (the Levant) and became a disciple and helper of Sunan Gunung Jati (Laduni.id; Kemenparekraf official tourism inventory). Tradition tells that his uncuttable long hair, which he tied up ("magelung"), led him to seek a master able to cut it, which Sunan Gunung Jati accomplished. In Cirebon tradition he is remembered alongside Nyi Mas Gandasari. His tomb complex in Karangkendal (Kapetakan, Cirebon), with the red-brick walls typical of Cirebon Sultanate figures and a sacred well ("Sumur Puser Bumi"), is a popular pilgrimage site. His biography is largely legendary and his death year is not firmly known.

Syekh Burhanuddin Ulakan

A major mystic regarded as the pioneer of Islamization in West Sumatra (Minangkabau) (c. 1646–1704). Born "Pono," he studied for about thirty years in Aceh under Syekh Abdurrauf al-Singkili, receiving the Shattariyah (Şattâriyye) order (en.wikipedia, "Burhanuddin Ulakan"; official Padang Pariaman Regency site; Wikidata Q25463994). Around 1680 he returned to Ulakan, founded a surau (Surau Gadang), and spread the Shattariyah throughout Minangkabau. His tomb in Ulakan is the center of the annual "Basapa" pilgrimage in the month of Safar, drawing pilgrims from West Sumatra, Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei; the tomb was designated a national cultural heritage in 2025. (Some sources give a death year of 1691, but the academic weight favors 1704.)

Syekh Abdul Muhyi Pamijahan

A great Sundanese saint and the first to spread the Shattariyah (Şattâriyye) order in West Java (c. 1650 – 1730). He was a student of Syekh Abdurrauf al-Singkili in Aceh and the first to bring the Shattariyah and the "Martabat Tujuh" teaching to Java (id.wikipedia, "Abdul Muhyi"; "Shattariyah Tradition on West Java" academic paper; official Tasikmalaya Regency tourism site). Around 1690 he settled at Safarwadi/Pamijahan, using the Gua Safarwadi cave for seclusion (khalwat) and founding one of the earliest pesantren in southern Tasikmalaya. His tomb complex is a major pilgrimage site, especially before Ramadan and during Mawlid; the coordinate given is at village-center level (OSM-confirmed, approximate).

Datuk ri Bandang (Abdul Makmur, Khatib Tunggal)

A Minangkabau jurist and preacher who Islamized South Sulawesi (early 17th century). With his companions he spread Islam among the kingdoms of Luwu, Gowa, Tallo, Gantarang (Sulawesi), Kutai (Kalimantan) and Bima (Nusa Tenggara); he converted the Raja of Luwu in 1605 and then the rulers of Gowa and Tallo, marking the formal Islamization of South Sulawesi (id.wikipedia, "Datuk ri Bandang"; Detik.com biography). He settled and died in Makassar; his tomb, holding 61 graves of followers, is a major pilgrimage site especially before Ramadan and is protected as a cultural-heritage (cagar budaya) site. His death year is not firmly recorded in the sources.

Umar al-Muhdar ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Saqqaf

Son of Abd al-Rahman al-Saqqaf, Umar al-Muhdar was the leading scholar and Sufi who institutionalised the Bâ Alawi community of Tarim in the 15th century. He established a broad consultative council and organised the mosques, endowments and welfare work of Tarim, al-Shihr and al-Mukalla. He built the famous al-Muhdar Mosque, whose mud-brick minaret (about 50 m) is one of the tallest in the world. He died while prostrate in the noon prayer and was buried beside his forefathers in the Zanbal Cemetery of Tarim.

Shaykh Sa'id ibn Isa al-Amudi

Shaykh Sa'id ibn Isa al-Amudi (d. 671/1272) was a Shafii jurist and Sufi who lived in the town of Qaydun in Wadi Dawan, Hadramaut. Adopting the path of the Andalusian Abu Madyan, he founded the Amudiyya order, a branch of the Madyaniyya, and established a strong spiritual leadership in Wadi Dawan; the sources give limited detail on his life and order, and no authored work is attributed to him. He was buried beside his own mosque in Qaydun, and his grave is today among the foremost pilgrimage sites of Hadramaut. The death year (671) does not appear in the TDV entry; as it rests on hagiographic and reference sources, this transparency is noted here.

Ubaydillah ibn Ahmad al-Muhajir

He represents one of the early ancestors of the Bâ Alawi lineage in Yemen; he was the son of Ahmad ibn Isa al-Muhajir, who migrated from Basra to Hadramaut. Following his father he settled in the village of al-Sumal near Tarim, where he died in 383 AH (993 CE). His son Alawi was the first member of the family born in Yemen, and the entire Bâ Alawi (Al Ba Alawi) sada lineage descends through this branch. No cross-verified numeric coordinate exists for al-Sumal, so no map pin is placed.

Muntajab al-Din Zar Zari Zar Baksh

One of the earliest Chishti shaykhs in the Deccan (d. 709/1309). A disciple of Nizamuddin Awliya and brother of Burhan al-Din Gharib, he was sent to the Aurangabad region in the early 14th century and is also known as "Dulha Miyan" (Wikipedia, "Zar Zari Zar Baksh"; New Age Islam). His dargah at Khuldabad, near his brother's tomb, remains an active pilgrimage site. Note: the 709 AH date rests on a single hagiographic source, and Wikipedia's precise "15 August 1309" is unsourced and should be treated as tradition; genealogical and miracle accounts are legendary (transparency note). Abd al-Rahman al-Saqqaf ibn Muhammad

Abd al-Rahman al-Saqqaf (739/1338 – 819/1416) was one of the great forefathers of the Bâ Alawi tradition in Tarim, regarded as founder of the Saqqaf (Al Saqqaf) branch and called "al-Muqaddam al-thani" for his closeness to al-Faqih al-Muqaddam. He earned the epithet "al-Saqqaf" (the roofer) because he veiled his spiritual states beneath humility as under a roof. He taught the classics such as al-Ghazali's Ihya, al-Qushayri's Risala and al-Suhrawardi's Awarif al-Maarif, and built ten mosques in Hadramaut. His thirteen sons, including Umar al-Muhdar and Abu Bakr al-Sakran, all became scholars; he was buried beside his father in the Zanbal Cemetery of Tarim.

Abu Bakr al-Sakran ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Saqqaf

Abu Bakr al-Sakran was a Sufi and scholar of the Bâ Alawi sada family raised in Tarim, Hadramaut; his father was the great master Abd al-Rahman al-Saqqaf. He was called "al-Sakran" (the spiritually intoxicated) because he became so absorbed in worship and remembrance that he was unaware of his surroundings. Through his sons Ali al-Sakran and the great saint Abdullah al-Aydarus, his line produced the most famous Bâ Alawi branch (the Aydarusiyya). He is reported to have died in Tarim and been buried with his forefathers in the Zanbal Cemetery. Traditional sources give his death as 821 AH (1418 CE); this caution is noted here as academic sources give limited confirmation of an exact figure.

Abdullah ibn Abd al-Hakam

Abu Muhammad Abdullah ibn Abd al-Hakam ibn A'yan al-Misri al-Maliki was born in 150 AH (767 CE) in Alexandria and became the foremost Maliki jurist of Egypt. Having received Imam Malik's law and legal methodology from three great Egyptian scholars — Ibn al-Qasim, Ibn Wahb, and Ashhab al-Qaysi — he succeeded Ashhab as the leading mufti of the Maliki school in Egypt. He authored a biography of the caliph Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz and three legal compendia (al-Mukhtasar al-kabir with some 18,000 issues, al-awsat, and al-saghir), and was the patriarch of the family that produced the historian Ibn Abd al-Hakam through his sons Muhammad, Abd al-Rahman, Abd al-Hakam, and Sa'd. He died in Ramadan 214 AH (November 829 CE) in Cairo and was buried beside the grave of Imam al-Shafi'i in the Qarafa cemetery (Ibn Hibban gives 213 AH). Sayyida Aisha bint Ja'far al-Sadiq

Sayyida Aisha is, according to popular tradition, a daughter of the sixth Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq and a member of the Ahl al-Bayt descended from Ali; she is said to have died in 145 AH (762 CE). Her tomb lies in the Mosque and Mausoleum of Sayyida Aisha near Salah al-Din Square in Islamic Cairo, one of the most visited shrines in that district. The site began as a small domed shrine over her grave; Saladin later added an adjoining madrasa, and the present mosque was rebuilt in 1971. Note transparently: the TDV Islamic Encyclopedia's article on Ja'far al-Sadiq does not list a daughter named Aisha among his children, so the shrine's attribution rests on popular tradition — a common feature of Cairo's Ahl al-Bayt maqams, whose attributions are frequently disputed. Ibn al-Qasim (Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Qasim al-Utaqi)

Abu Abd Allah Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Qasim al-Utaqi, known as Ibn al-Qasim, was among the foremost jurists of the Maliki school and the closest students of Imam Malik. He kept the company of Malik in Medina for roughly twenty years, learning fiqh directly from him until Malik's death. His transmission of the Muwatta is regarded as the soundest, and his teachings and legal opinions were later compiled by Sahnun into al-Mudawwana al-kubra, which became the foundational source of Maliki jurisprudence after the Muwatta. He died in Egypt on 9 Safar 191 AH (25 December 806 CE), shortly after returning from the Hajj, and was buried in the al-Qarafa al-Sughra cemetery in Cairo. Muhammad Wafa

Muhammad Wafa (d. 765/1363) was a Sufi born in Alexandria who founded the Wafā'iyya branch of the Shādhiliyya order. After a period in Akhmim in Upper Egypt he settled in Cairo, guiding disciples from the Rawda (Manyal) district on the Nile. Together with his son Ali he developed a cyclical theory of history and a doctrine of the seal of sainthood (khatm al-awliyā') that brought the Akbarian tradition of Ibn 'Arabī into the Shādhilī framework, marking the order's chief departure from mainstream Shādhiliyya. He was buried in the shrine-mosque of the Sādāt al-Wafā'iyya at the foot of the Muqattam near the mausoleum of Imam al-Shāfi'ī, which became the burial complex of the Wafā family and the center of the order.
