A Yemeni ascetic and one of the foremost of the Tâbiîn, famed for embracing Islam without meeting the Prophet. Sources hold he was martyred at the Battle of Siffin (657 CE) on Ali's side; his true burial site is disputed (Raqqa, Zabid, Damascus, etc.). The shrine in Ziyaret, Baykan district of Siirt is one of Anatolia's most-visited makams; though its authenticity as the actual grave is contested, it has been venerated for centuries.
